The Technology & Science Behind Bio Sewage Systems

Our Philosophy

The Way Nature Does It

In an industry focused on mechanical complexity and high energy consumption, Bio Sewage Systems returns to the source of all renewal: nature. Our technology is founded on a single principle: harnessing the biological cycles perfected by the Earth itself.

Our process is not about overcoming nature with expensive machinery; it is about guiding and accelerating it. We utilise a carefully managed, multi-stage biological cycle to break down wastewater contaminants, creating a self-sustaining system that requires minimal energy and maintenance.

Why Choose the Natural Process?

Low Energy Footprint

Aeration, the single largest energy consumer in conventional wastewater treatment, is heavily optimised and significantly reduced in our system. This commitment directly challenges high-power, mechanically intensive competitor plants, guaranteeing a lower carbon footprint and superior long-term energy savings.

Resilience & Consistency

Unlike chemical or purely mechanical systems, our robust biological environment can buffer common flow and load fluctuations, ensuring consistent DWS-compliant effluent quality, even during "shock loads."

Why Businesses Should Invest in Eco-Friendly Wastewater Treatment Solutions

The Scientific Process

Advanced Biological Treatment

All wastewater treatment is ultimately biological. We ensure our process is the most efficient and stable available by guiding the wastewater through two distinct, proven phases: Anaerobic and Aerobic digestion.

natural process

Wastewater treatment begins with the natural power of microorganisms. As water enters the anaerobic (oxygen-free) phase, specialised bacteria immediately start breaking down complex organic and chemical compounds. This is the foundation of the science and the process that drive efficient, sustainable purification in modern biological systems.

The Science

Biological wastewater treatment harnesses naturally occurring microorganisms to break down organic pollutants, convert nitrogen compounds, and purify water. Through controlled environments, these microbes metabolise waste into harmless by-products, delivering efficient, sustainable treatment with minimal chemicals while ensuring reliable, high-quality effluent.

The Benefit

Biological treatment offers low operating costs, high energy efficiency, and exceptional reliability. It produces minimal sludge, adapts easily to changing loads, and supports eco-friendly water reuse. The process is safe, robust, and sustainable delivering consistently clear, compliant effluent with reduced environmental impact

The partially treated wastewater then enters the Aerobic (oxygen-rich) phase, where the bulk of the final cleansing occurs.

The Science

Our system uses a low-energy aeration method to introduce the precise amount of oxygen required by the microbial community. These bacteria consume the remaining dissolved organic matter and—crucially—begin the essential nitrification and denitrification cycles, removing harmful nitrogen and phosphorus compounds.

The Benefit

The final product is crystal-clear, odourless water. This effluent consistently meets or exceeds the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) General Limits for reuse in irrigation and non-potable applications, addressing water scarcity and environmental compliance in one cycle.

The Bio Sewage Difference

Our commitment to biological efficiency and simplicity gives us a significant edge against the competitive landscape of mechanical and chemical-heavy systems.

Simple, Robust Design

Our design is built for the user. With fewer complex moving parts inside the bioreactor, our systems are easy for a homeowner or facilities manager to operate and maintain, reducing reliance on specialised technicians.

Superior Long-Term Durability

We provide a 10-Year Warranty on all Bio-Media and a 25-Year Expected Lifespan on our tanks and civil works, a leading promise of structural integrity and long-term asset value.

Zero Proprietary Dependence

Our success relies on accelerating natural bacteria, not proprietary strains or expensive chemical dosing. This ensures easier local sourcing of components and no dependence on a single supplier for maintenance.

Low-Power, High-ROI

By focusing on pre-treatment and low-energy aeration, our systems guarantee some of the lowest operational costs on the market, resulting in a faster Return on Investment (ROI) for our commercial and industrial clients.

By choosing Bio Sewage, you are investing in a sustainable, resilient, and scientifically proven solution that is engineered for decades of clean water and environmental compliance.

FAQs

1. What exactly is the "5-Shin Technology"?

The 5-Shin Technology is our proprietary, multi-stage biological process that mimics nature’s own purification cycles. The five stages—Collecshin, Nitrificashin, De-nitrificashin, Clarificashin, and Sterilizashin—work together to systematically remove solids, break down organic pollutants, eliminate nitrogen, and disinfect the water. This structured approach ensures that the water moving through the system is progressively purified until it meets strict DWS General Limits for reuse.

No. Our process is 100% biological. We rely on a self-sustaining community of naturally occurring bacteria that live on specialized bio-media within the tanks. These microbes “consume” the waste naturally, removing the need for the hazardous or expensive chemical dosing often required by older treatment technologies. The only addition is a final sterilization step (usually chlorine or UV) to ensure the water is safe for contact during irrigation.

Because our 5-Shin process includes a dedicated “Collecshin” (balancing) stage, the system acts as a buffer. If you have a party or a high-traffic day at your business, the system stores and gradually introduces the wastewater into the biological reactors. This prevents the “washing out” of beneficial bacteria and ensures the treatment quality remains consistent even during peak usage times.

One of the biggest advantages of our process is its high efficiency in breaking down organic matter, which results in minimal sludge production. The small amount of inorganic material that cannot be digested is captured in the primary chamber during the “Collecshin” stage. Unlike traditional septic tanks that need pumping every few months, our systems typically only require a “de-sludging” service once every 2 to 3 years, depending on usage.

Wastewater treatment is a complex biological journey. Different types of bacteria (anaerobic and aerobic) are required to remove different pollutants like ammonia and nitrates. A single-tank system often tries to do everything at once, which is less efficient and prone to odors. By separating the process into five distinct stages, we create the perfect environment for each specific biological reaction to thrive, resulting in much cleaner, clearer, and more reliable water output.

All our systems are designed to meet the Department of Water & Sanitation (DWS) General Authorisations, as this is a strict requirement for developers and commercial property owners in South Africa.
